The First BDSG Basic Training for New Volunteers!

Image
As part of youth empowerment in disaster risk reduction, BDSG conducted a Basic Training in September 27, 2014 in its secretariat. This was aimed for reaching another milestone towards the sustainability of BDSG. Participants of the training consist of those who have joined BDSG activities a few times and those who were completely new to BDSG.  It was the first training conducted formally by BDSG. Usually BDSG volunteers were informally trained along with their participation in activities. Those who were more active would automatically became more skilled in designing concept of activities, in communicating, or in delivering materials in the school sessions. But it was about time to involve more skilled and committed volunteers to implement more missions of BDSG, quantity-wise and quality-wise. Therefore BDSG started to formalize its recruitment process, capacity building activities, and volunteer structure.  This basic training would be the first step of any intereste

DRR YEP 2014 - Japan Phase Day #1

Konbanwa! So, today we have arrived in Japan safe and sound. We are all so excited about this trip! 8 volunteers are ready to learn, share and have fun in Kobe, Kyoto and Osaka. We didn't have any schedule for today so we spent our day preparing each members for activities 1 week ahead then, we went to Port of Kobe Earth Quake Memorial Park. After the shocking moment of The Great Hanshin  19 years ago, Kobe ha s already  fully recovered from the massive damage on its city. Here we can see nothing but another great city as it used to be. Except, at a little corner of the bay there's a place that left unrepaired and remain damaged. This place reminds us a lot about how disaster could harm us and also how important it is for us to prepare before it happens :) That's all from me now! Stay tune for other updates here and facebook! Oyasuminasaaaaai Cheers, Rifa

November Sharing Session: Tangkuban Parahu, Kawan Atau Lawan?

The sharing session was conducted on the 9 th of November in the Auditorium of the Geology Museum in Bandung and was open to the public in general. Before the start of the sharing session, a video about the Kars Rajamandala area by the Board of Geology was shown to the audience. Fossils and pre-historical records have been found in Gua Pawon, one of the caves in the area. However, the area is being threatened by mining activities around it. The video shows just how important the area is and that we should mitigate its threats to preserve it. The sharing session started with an introduction of BDSG and what we do, which is to Learn, Share, and Volunteer. We explained our activities such as sharing sessions, school sessions, DRR-Young Exchange Program, and Campaigns, as well as our upcoming activities. After that the audience was asked to participate in an ice breaking game which is called the Bosai Duck, which is also a game that is used as a teaching method about disa

DRR YEP 2013 Activity: Visiting PSBA (13th September 2013)

Actually this is about our 2 nd day activity and it was the very first time for us to make connection with Yogyakarta’s institution. Both BDSG and WASEND were straining relationship to Pusat Studi Bencana Alam (PSBA - Natural Disaster Study Center) of Gadjah Mada University. We were so excited! First Bapak Jati from PSBA UGM introduced their institution, followed by Adhitya from BDSG and Koichi Saito from WASEND. Then PSBA played a documentary film about their establishment and roles. Their core activity is to spread or publicize science so it’s acceptable and applicable to the community for disaster management in Yogyakarta and surrounding. At the next session Bapak Made introduced PSBA’s role in detail. They have so many activities to handle. Surprisingly those activities are not only related to natural disasters but also disasters caused by human behavior! They think that the deviation of human behavior could lead people to the most destructive disaster ever, which is nat

DRR YEP 2013 Activity: Interesting Experience in Dangerous District

This is my first article for BDSG and I will talk about my recent homestay activity with BDSG members and our Japanese friends from WASEND in Jogjakarta last month. I was very excited because that was the first time I went to Jogjakarta. I did the homestay activity with our Japanese friends for 6 days. In that homestay activity, we done a lot of things, one of our missions in homestay activity was doing the DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) action. The action was taken in our host family’s house and involving all the members of host family. In our nervously start (because that was our first DRR action!), we discussed about the emergency bag. After they got the knowledge about emergency bag, we moved forward to analyze the evacuation route that their house has. This action could help them if disaster happens because they already know how to escape to a safer place. Another important thing besides knowing about evacuation route is to know how dangerous your house is, so  we analyz
